She’s an actress, a model, a singer and a dancer making her a quadruple threat in the entertainment industry. You know Mackenzie Ziegler from Lifetime’s Dance Moms and the Nickelodeon series Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn. VULKAN caught up with Mackenzie to talk about her passion for dance and music and how her collaboration with Justice Clothing transpired.

What styles of dance do you most enjoy performing?

Jazz funk and hip hop are my favorites.

Who would you love to collaborate with on a new routine?

My friend Sean Lew. He is an amazing dancer!

How did your active wear line with Justice Clothing come about?

When Justice reached out to my team about collaborating I was excited about the opportunity. I love fashion and dancing and getting to work with the Justice team on my lines has been such an amazing experience.

How does it feel to have your own clothing line in a popular international store and was this always a goal of yours?

When I was little I was obsessed with Justice. My mom would buy me everything from there! When the opportunity to collaborate with them on a line came about, I was so excited. I love seeing girls at my shows in the clothes!

How would you describe your personal style?

Cute and casual at the same time. I like to be comfortable but still look cute!

Since you’ve been dancing from a young age, and now you have segued into singing, is singing something you’ve also always wanted to do?

When I was younger, I was more focused on dancing. I was 6 when I started taking voice lessons. Once I worked in a recording studio and heard my songs, I was hooked!

What was the experience like recording your song ‘Breathe’ and shooting the music video?

I loved making that video! It was so much fun. It is probably my favorite video I have done so far. I got to have my friends dance with me and we were at this cool airport in the desert. We danced on an actual runway! I got to record the song with Alan Notkin and Brandon Paddock (Fancy Cars) – I have worked with them before and they always make it fun. They are super talented.

Are you someone who comes to the studio with a full arrangement ready, or do you prefer to come in with a clean canvas?

I keep a journal that I bring with me. Sometimes something I have written in there will spark an idea for a song.

Is singing a career that you want to pursue long term?

Yes. I hope to be a big artist someday and sell out arenas! That’s a dream of mine.

If you could collaborate with any two artists in 2018, who would you choose?

Astrid S. I think her voice is amazing. I love her songs. I also love Hailee Steinfeld. It would be great to work with her!

Since starting your singing career, has dance taken a back seat while you focus on your new career path?

No. I still love dancing. I actually incorporate it into my shows on tour! It’s fun to do both. I don’t get to take as many dance classes because I am on tour, but I still love it!

What do you enjoy most about singing?

The immediate reaction from the crowd. It’s such a great feeling to hear them singing my songs.

Do you have any advice for those who aspire to do music or dance full time and are feeling unconfident in their abilities at this time?

I would just say to go for it. Don’t be scared to put yourself out there. You never know what you are capable of until you try!

What is one thing you have overcome in your life and how do you think it has improved an aspect of your life now?
I think I had very low confidence when I was younger. I have learned to not be scared of what people think. I don’t want to let anything stand in the way of my dreams.

What is to come from Mackenzie Ziegler for 2018?

Definitely more music and live shows! I also have a book coming out May 15th that I am excited about. It is called Kenzie’s Rules for Life. I love that I can share my life with the people who support me!
