There’s no denying that Mackenzie Ziegler is a multihyphenate. The dancer, actor, model, author, and singer is adding another title to her list of accomplishments: makeup mogul.
Mackenzie, who got her start as the youngest (and, if her one-liners were to be believed, wisest) Dance Moms cast member when she was 7, is launching her own beauty line. Love, Kenzie, which is available for pre-order now and officially drops on September 16th, features makeup inspired by Mackenzie’s own beauty journey. And the best part? It’s specifically made for people her age.
“I love makeup, so I definitely wanted to show people what I love and do a bunch of different colors for younger kids, too. They love makeup, and I definitely wanted to show kids that makeup that is very natural looking and very fun,” she tells Teen Vogue. “… And so I kind of just did very cute and dainty colors. I’m really excited because a lot kids my age are loving makeup right now, so I definitely think [they’ll] love it. And my friends will love it too!”
The line includes eyeshadow and cheek palettes, lip glosses, and — Mackenzie’s favorite product — highlighter. “I’m really obsessed with highlighters, and I made sure all of the products are very pigmented and don’t have fall out or anything,” she says, noting that she’s been channeling Rihanna and secretly using the line on herself for months.
Mackenzie has undeniably had her fair share of professional successes, but Love, Kenzie might just be the most personal thing she’s ever created. “The product means something to me,” she says. “Like some of the products are my friend’s names, or one is about dancing, and I love it so much. It’s definitely a very personal line and all of the colors are very fun and it definitely can be for younger people and older.” The name of the line, too, has roots in her everyday life: She always signs off texts to her friends with the line, Love, Kenzie.
Mackenzie’s love for beauty comes in the family. She admits she’s learned almost everything she knows about makeup from her big sister, Maddie Ziegler. “My sister started doing my makeup at competitions when she was six or seven, which is crazy that she would do my full competition makeup,” says Mackenzie, who remembers watching Maddie recreate YouTube tutorials IRL, and began copying them herself. “I started to learn, and I kind of wanted to do it myself because I didn’t want my sister to touch my face at 7 a.m. in the morning. So I started to get into and I loved it so much.”
Now, in true “supportive sister” fashion, Maddie has been one of Mackenzie’s biggest cheerleaders in the launch of Love, Kenzie. “My sister loves [the products], which means a lot because she’s very into makeup, and so I was a little concerned about what she would say, but she’s really into it,” Mackenzie says. “I kind of just wanted to have her input on everything. She definitely helped with a lot of it and what colors needed to be in the palette or how I should brand this and everything.”
Makeup isn’t the only thing the Ziegler sisters bond over when it comes to beauty: The dancing duo also loves to hang out at home and try out new face masks together. Their current favorite, Mackenzie says, is the GlamGlow x My Little Pony Glitter Mask — partly for the sake of the glitter, partly because of how amazing it makes her skin look.
Though Mackenzie has an entire makeup line at her disposal, her go-to look tends to be pretty natural. “Most of the time, I always put a similar eyelid and a glossy lip and I always just feel so confident, because it’s natural in a way, but then again you’re kind of spicing it up with a different eyeshadow,” she says, adding that for her, makeup is more about having fun than concealing flaws. “It’s kind of just a fun way to express yourself.” – Teen Vogue
